Artscape Theatre – Free A six-member ‘Kathak’ Dance Troupe from Pt. Arjun Mishra Kathak Academy, sponsored by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, New Delhi and the High Commission of India. Kathak is one of the eight dance forms of Indian classical dances. The name Kathak is derived from the Sanskrit words katha meaning story, and katthaka meaning one who tells a story. This dance form traces its origins to the nomadic bards of ancient northern India, known as Kathaks, or storytellers. These bards, performing in village squares and temple courtyards, mostly specialized in recounting mythological and moral tales from the scriptures, and embellished their recitals with hand gestures and facial expressions, using instrumental and vocal music to enliven the stories.
