The Raging Storm is an exhibition of album art by Storm Thorgerson. Storm has an incredible talent for translating the ideas, thoughts and feelings of musicians and transforming them into powerful and thought provoking imagery that we as the public associate with the music of some of the greatest bands of our time. With a career spanning almost five decades. Storm has designed album covers for Pink Floyd, Dream Theater, The Mars Volta, Muse and Biffy Clyro to name a few. The Raging Storm runs from Monday 20 February to Saturday 10 March 2012 at 6 Spin Street.

The exhibition draws it's name from Storm's recent book of the same name.

“Only Revolutions is a title borrowed from a book which told the tale of a broken relationship between a man and a woman from both sides. At the outset I was talking to Dan about revolutions - is real change only feasible through revolution? - and how the  participants were often represented by flags and how those flags became very important and symbolic. And he said ‘gags that become flags’, and talked about how prisoners of revolution would be gagged, and how these bits of material might become the flags of revolution but just much bigger, emblematic rather than actual. Such a great idea Dan, mostly because I could see it in my mind immediately, humongously large flags blowing in the wind, billowing and undulating in extraordinary shapes.” Storm Thorgerson

“When asked what the album was about Steve replied ‘Having a party’. I pressed him for more. ‘It’s about having a good time”. I thought we needed an image or a design that is not about having a good time, but about giving you a good time, there and then. I guess, simply put, an image that makes you smile a little when you look at it. On seeing the design Steve said ‘I like this but I don’t get it. Why does the rabbit need a ladder to get up?’ I said ‘No, it’s a hare, and the ladder is not for going up but for coming down, as in ‘Let your hair down’,which we all know is an expression for having a good time. It’s both metaphor and not real, because the bald man has no hair’.” Storm Thorgerson

“We saw Steve Miller playing a concert in Oakland exchanging riffs with 2 different guitarists on 2 different songs and it made us think of multiple exchanges between different types of instruments in different types of music - rock, jazz and blues - as a common, if not fundamental factor, a bit like exchanging rhymes. Our design tries to visually represent this ‘duelling’ using cowboys in a cowboy town, exchanging not bullets from guns but using objects that sound the same (pear, chair, teddy bear) or look the same (circles), known to us as Rhyming Showdown and apt as Steve comes from Texas.” Storm Thorgerson
