Unshelved is a celebratory autobiographical work choreographed and performed by Alfred Elikem Kunutsor. Alfred, who is currently completing his Masters in physical theatre at Wits University, takes you on a journey of self discovery into what constitutes YOU. There is a constant dialogue between the growing individual, his environment and society. The changes that occur in one’s growth is brought to the fore through the embodiment of culture, tradition, religion and other stages in 1 body.
This piece consciously explores through physicalisation and movement how each stage in our growth influences the other and the stories they have to tell, voiding it of all limitations. At the heart of this exploration is the acknowledgment of society and its influences on the individual as well as the individual and his/her influence on society.
Born and bread in a Ghanaian society helped shape Alfred’s life in a particular way both through inscription and learning. Being exposed to a South African society also had its own influence. The question that gets posed then is; how do all these experiences get carried out in one body with each one of them accorded a truthful voice and expression? How does society play itself out in these experiences?
