“It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing...”
The great Louis Armstrong was once asked by Bing Crosby, during a national radio broadcast, to explain swing. Armstrong famously said “Ah, swing, well, we used to call it ragtime, then blues, then jazz. Now it’s swing.”
Paying tribute to this popular music genre from the early 20th century, Cedric Vandenschrik has produced and directed a new show titled Swing on a Star which opens at GrandWest’s Roxy Revue Bar on Thursday, 9 April and runs through to 30 May, Wednesdays through to Saturdays.
The audience can expect to hear a medley of songs from the early classics to the reign of the “rat pack”, namely Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Junior. Other famous artists whose swing music will be represented are Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole and even the likes of Michael Bubble and Robbie Williams.
The show boasts a talented cast from Amanda Tiffin, who also assisted with musical direction, to Sandile Gontsana and Lee Gelderbloem, a “miniature” big band, and a full rhythm section.
Doors open at 20h00 and the show starts promptly at 20h30. Tickets cost R67,00 through Computicket.
