07 Apr 2009 DENNIS STRATTON OF IRON MAIDEN FAME , CLYDE LAWRENCE and JESSICA Foord (POWAR) have joined forces in “SA’s Fight against Crime” and are hosting  INTERNATIONAL MUSIC EVENTS  throughout SA  to raise funds for the first Jes Foord POWAR Centre in SA. The cost will be in the region of R3 million and proceeds from the Dennis Stratton Tribute TO HIS MAIDEN YEARS & a special Unrehearsed 7 music evening starting in Durban and ending in JHB  will be utilised towards this desperate and worthy cause.

The Jes Foord POWAR Centre…
Jessica Foord is a survivor of a horrific gang rape last year and sadly the trauma continued afterwards and she also had to endure the criminal justice process which is hopelessly unsympathetic to a rape victim’s plight.

Jes’ ordeal has made her determined to build a network of rape aftercare facilities across South Africa to assist woman with proper rape aftercare. Most rape survivors feel ashamed and almost responsible for the rape because the criminal justice procedures are not supportive or understanding of the victim’s state of mind. More about POWAR....

P.O.W.A.R
POWAR is the acronym for Protect Our Woman against Rape, a powerful and focused movement led by the determined and energetic Jes Foord. Jes has gained considerable exposure through Carte Blanche, East Coast Radio, Independent Newspapers, Bite, Physiologies and Bite Magazines.

The Vision…
To build a network of POWAR rape aftercare facilities across South Africa to assist woman with proper rape aftercare.  Born out of the further humiliation experienced due to post rape BY UNSYMPATHETIC AUTHORITIES Jes’s vision is to  build a centre for rape victims where  statements, examinations and other processes can all be conducted in one place, without women having to trudge from one centre to another and to help rape survivors better handle post rape examinations and police interrogation.

"There will be showers so the women don't have to go home and have this memory there," she said.
“People who see themselves as rape victims must remember that they are survivors.

There is life after rape. They take your body, but they cannot take your mind, spirit or personality."
Jes says people need to change their attitudes towards rape and this is was why she has chosen to be named and to make it "personal".

"I grew up in the Highway / KZN community. There, people won't just say: 'That girl that got raped.' It will be:
'Jess was raped.' That pain is something they can all take and use positively," she said.

POWAR can be reached at 079 284 1262 or www.powar.co.za.
