31 Aug 2010 Moshito_LogoThe programme and strong speaker line-up for this year’s Moshito Music Conference and Exhibition is set to get South Africa’s music business talking with its mix of contentious, topical and informative sessions.

The three-day event – which takes place on September 1st to 3rd at Museum Africa in Newtown, Joburg – tackles several key issues facing the domestic music industry head-on through a conference programme that doesn’t shy away from hot topics.

One of these is the Breakaway session “360 Degree Deals: Threat or Opportunity’ which is sure to get both sides of the global hot-button fired up! Another essential session is “Copyright or Copyleft” which explores the debates around digital copyright from both a domestic and international perspective.

Also in the spotlight is a look back at the 2010 FIFA World Cup – and, in particular, the opportunities (or not) that eventually materialized for artists. Another topic that is bound to get local musicians talking is an examination of why it’s so difficult to get music videos played on television in South Africa as well as the topic which looks at the role of DJs in getting music out to fans.

Digital music trends again make-up a significant part of the Moshito 2010 programme – among them a briefing on the ‘Leading Trends In Digital Music’ on the opening day and a look a ‘Music, Mobile and Gadgets: How Can The Music Industry Help Maximise The Potential of The Mobile And Download Market’.

The Moshito 2010 programme is also jam-packed with sessions designed to impart practical, up-to-date information to newcomers to the South African music industry – along with those who just want to refresh their knowledge.

These include a Music Business Starter Kit session, a financial session on ‘Making Your Money Stretch on the same day, a SARS Compliance session and ‘How To Build A Solid Hip-Hop Career’ on the closing day of Moshito 2010. Briefings by South Africa’s key music industry organisations on September 2nd give delegates an opportunity to get the lowdown needed to take their career forward.

Not-to-be-missed on the 2010 Moshito programme is Steve Navin – one of the event’s international speakers. Since 2006, Navin has been the CEO of the Music Publishers Association, representing the profession of music publishing in the UK.

Also contributing this year is a who’s who of South Afrcain-based music business experts including Brian Currin of Brian Currin Music, a well-known Media Marketing Consultant; Thabiso Khati, CEO of Johannesburg-based Street Music; Yoel Kenan, the founder and CEO of online digital music marketing company, Africori; Jacob Sibiya, Communications Manager at UJ FM; Eugene Ulman Director at Zimbabwe’s Elegwa Arts; Nick Matzukis of the Academy of Sound Engineering lecturer; DJ Christos, CEO of Katsaitis Music; Charlie Beuthin, MTV Base’s Talent and Music Manager and Deon Maas, MD of Meerkat Media.

This year’s conference again features an expo section as well as a number of free live showcase events.
