Discover an exciting new talent on the local music scene on 25 and 26 March 2010, when Naledi King performs at the Wits Theatre in a celebration of womanhood and artistic spirit.
Naledi will be introducing her self-titled debut solo album during the ‘Naledi King – Live at Wits’ concert, featuring a number of special guests.
These include celebrated poet and performance artist Phillippa Yaa de Villiers, five-piece a cappella group Beyond Vocal, super-cool R&B singer Sgebi and Bongo Maffin’s Jahseed, aka South Africa’s godfather of ragga/dancehall.
Naledi has chosen to present her debut album in a theatre as opposed to a night spot, because her show is closer to an intimate musical encounter than it is to a conventional pop concert.
Her striking debut album brings together an intriguing diversity of styles that look set to put this Swaziland-born newcomer on the music map: part adult contemporary, part soul, part R&B and part pop.
The album ‘Naledi King’ has been described as a “world-class” record that announces a dynamic new talent with an innate musical gift that’s rapidly moving her towards the musical terrain occupied by her music icons: Jill Scott, Celine Dion and Barbra Streisand.
It comes as no surprise that the stylish Naledi built up a name with a hair-braiding business that become the first port of call for models, stylists, photographers and others working in the Joburg fashion industry. She has also modelled herself, appearing in the Sun International commercial featuring Charlize Theron.
But for this beautiful and fiercely determined woman, there was always only one destination in mind since the age of 12: to make music her life.
Her debut album marks the culmination of a dream, assisted by her husband Jose Carpintero, a self-taught studio whizz. Alongside Jose, Naledi’s creative connections with Durrell Jacinto (who goes under the artist name Steadyrock) and Mnqobi Nxumalo form the core of the songs and production on ‘Naledi King’, released through the independent Suncliff Music Factory.
The result of this highly focused woman finding just the right people to work with is an 11-track album that delivers a deeply satisfying and rich listening experience.
Naledi’s concerts at Wits, which start at 8pm, will feature an array of diverse music treats from the singer and her guests, delivering an entertainment experience to savour. Naledi will take audiences along with her on a powerful emotional journey, in a performance brimming with drama and sheer class.
Don’t miss the chance to witness a singer who is going places, and whose music is set to invigorate South Africa’s lacklustre adult contemporary music scene. Catch ‘Naledi King – Live at Wits’ on 25 and 26 March at the Wits Theatre in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. Secure parking is available at Senate House in Jorissen Street.
