Don’t miss out on seeing Abdullah Ibrahim and the WDR Big Band play ‘Bombella’ live! There are just under 10 days to go until Abdullah Ibrahim and the Grammy Award-winning WDR Big Band make their live South African debut, playing the critically-acclaimed new Ibrahim album, ‘Bombella’.
Conducted by world-renowned conductor Michael Abene, the first show of the tour takes place at the Cape Town Convention Centre on May 29th before moving to the Port Elizabeth Opera House on June 1st and closing in Joburg at the Lyric Theatre on June 5th.
‘Bombella’ is now released in South Africa by Sony Music Entertainment Africa – and it’s being hailed as one of the best albums of Ibrahim’s already incredible career.
A four-star recent review in the UK newspaper, The Guardian, said, “The solemnity that has sometimes quietened the defiantly jubilant music of South African pianist and composer Abdullah Ibrahim hardly touches this terrific big-band album at all.”
The chance to see the multi-award winning South African pianist, composer, and band leader perform an album featuring newly arranged versions of Ibrahim’s work by the acclaimed, late British arranger Steve Gray should not be missed by South African music lovers. Among the compositions on ‘Bombella’ are ‘Mandela’, ‘Song For Sathima’, ‘African River’, and ‘Bombella’.
Musicians can also benefit from the tour through a series of workshops planned for each of the three cities.
Abdullah Ibrahim and the WDR Big Band Cologne Present Bombella is part of "Football meets Culture", a diverse series of cultural events organised by the Goethe-Institut and the German Embassy for the 2010 World Cup.
