Volume Rock Fest was born out of a love for music – but more specifically South African music. It is, however, a very nose-in-the-air love, because Volume has no time for backtracks and girls with skimpy outfits and screechy voices. At Volume there’s only space for hard on rock & roll.
This might sound too exclusive, but don’t be fooled, for rock & roll has got more to offer than guitar riffs and skinny jeans, as is proven by Volume’s line-up. True rock & roll also has room for the perfect harmonies and enticing beep-beep of Die Heuwels Fantasties. It has the inviting aroma of love and Jah through Tidal Waves. They’re not the only ones you can “lekker-lekker dans” to, because Zinkplaat requires some bare foot swanking and lighter-in-the-air worshipping. You can pretend to be back in the Swinging Sixties while lusting after the Pretty Blue Guns. Alternatively you can get rid of all your pent up angst and nihilism with Van Coke Kartel. For purists, there’s New Holland – the reincarnation of the true rock & roll spirit.
Volume is not discriminative about ages though. Grandparents and their grand-children are welcome – but the latter will have to get high on “gees”, because no alcohol will be sold to juveniles (or delinquents).
All of these sounds give only one resounding message – rock & roll has a tune for everyone with love and a will to boogie and Volume Rock Fest is their home.
Nicol van den Berg, organises the shindig. This is the second year in a row that he’s working his fingers to the bone to give Potchefstromers a creamy-lick of the best the crop has to offer. The Fest goes hand in hand with an innovative viral marketing campaign and impossibly cheap tickets. All of this awesomeness is made possible with the friendly help of MK, Beyerskloof, Kampus Beeld, PUKfm, Red Bull. Pirates and their parrots are welcome (but please leave your muskets, hooks and swords at home, guys).
History repeats itself with the whole shebang going down at the Trimpark-grounds in Potchefstroom on 15 May. The space will be utilised better though, with fires to keep you cosy and lights all round so that you can party the night away safely. The gate opens at 17:00 and tickets are available at the gate for R35.
