16 May 2009 Dorien du Toit lists himself in the Splashy Fen Magazine and programme as a Writer of songs, poetry and prose. Performer, entertainer, MC, school teacher, comedian, singer, musician and artist. The last Hippie south of the Sahara, promoting random and regular lapses of reason in all those he encounters. Quite a mouthful!

Apart from Dorien's performance at Splashy Fen, he was also the daytime MC on the Grant Erkskine Marquee on most of the days. Dorien is based in Port Elizabeth and runs a regular music night called the Fire Club for those of you who are looking for something to do in PE. Below is more detail on the Fire Club.

Fire Club
formed a few years ago after I had left my 10 years of being MC and stage manager for the Splashy Fen 5 day annual festival in the Drakensburg. After having to deal with audiences of 8 to 10 thousand, I decided to go back to “small is beautiful”. Based on the idea that there is magnificence in all of us, and that given an intimate, appreciative and focused audience plus a warm and supportive stage, most performers excel beyond their own estimation of themselves.

My task is to create such an ambience and maintain it throughout the show. Thus the relaxed ambiance, the low tech setup and my comedy on stage. Take the formality and plastic out, and everyone relaxes and their genuinness flows. In this way we nurture, support and showcase the inexperienced and revive retired seasoned performers across the board.

We focus on local, original, multi-cultural talent, but have also presented national and international performers, eg Duncan Mackay from 10cc and Barry van Zyl from Jaluka, The Aquarian Quartet, etc. who all play for free in appreciation of our refreshing setup.

Since 1970, I have founded & co-founded such non profit projects such as the annual festivals for Bomvu, Four Winds Folk Club, Splashy Fen, etc, plus cross-cultural fests for the Chinese community, Blue Water Bay, etc.

Fire Club holds a concert on the first Saturday of every month, (travelling venue to be announced for the next few months). R25 entrance. Kids under 12 free. Variety is the key: we usually have 6 sets, with “fillers” in between, eg fire dancers, poets, comedians , etc. Any performers wishing to feature should contact me at 0726583006 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
