This year’s Visual Art programme of the National Arts Festival sees a trend of inter-linking exhibitions, site-specific performances and a break away from conventional spaces. The film programme will once again be crammed with esoteric world cinema highlights, South African films and opportunities to see some recent movie-house successes. The 38th National Arts Festival runs from 28 June to 8 July in Grahamstown this year.

A major South African artist Herman Wald will have his biggest exhibition in Cape Town, forty two years after his death. The digital-age retrospective will also break new ground in the Arts market, offering online global access to the entire collection and its catalogue. The exhibition, Wings of the Shechinah - The Sculptural Art of Herman Wald, opens at the South African Jewish Museum, Cape Town on 20th February and runs until 15 July 2012. On show will be almost 60 sculptures, more than 40 sketches, writings and audio visual displays.  Gallery hours are Sunday to Thursday 10am to 5pm and Fridays 10am to 2pm.

The Raging Storm is an exhibition of album art by Storm Thorgerson. Storm has an incredible talent for translating the ideas, thoughts and feelings of musicians and transforming them into powerful and thought provoking imagery that we as the public associate with the music of some of the greatest bands of our time. With a career spanning almost five decades. Storm has designed album covers for Pink Floyd, Dream Theater, The Mars Volta, Muse and Biffy Clyro to name a few. The Raging Storm runs from Monday 20 February to Saturday 10 March 2012 at 6 Spin Street.

Candice Breitz: Extra! - the first comprehensive survey exhibition of the artist’s work to be presented in South Africa – is presented by Standard Bank in partnership with the Goethe-Institut and Goodman Gallery, and runs at the Standard Bank Gallery from 8 February until 5 April, 2012. Breitz, who was born in Johannesburg but now lives and works in Berlin, is an internationally renowned artist who has exhibited her photographs and video installations worldwide.

Jon-Pat Myers - Stone Sculptor

Jon-Pat Myers, South African born stone sculptor has just returned from representing the country in Huian China. Huian is China’s stone carving capital and Jon-Pat was one of 20 foreign sculptors chosen from countries around the globe. Countries participating in this year’s event included Russia, USA, Taiwan, Lithuania, Georgia, Italy, Albania, Turkey, Germany, Bulgaria, Japan, South Africa and of course China with participants representing each province.

'The past two decades have seen an enormous shift in South African art, with our local artworks becoming more internationalised and our artists taking their rightful place on a world stage,' says noted independent Cape Town art dealer and consultant, Rose Korber.  Celebrating her 20th annual Art Salon, Rose - herself an icon in the art industry - will be exhibiting works by many of these artists from 16 December 2011 to 31 January 2012.
